These pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them.– Rumi
Today, as I navigated the issues of feeling disempowered by job and feeling hopeless about the world situation, I decided to look for inspiration. I went to my bookshelf and pulled off a volume of translations from Rumi.
Often, I find that the wisdom of people from many, many centuries ago will help me recenter myself. The advancement of technology does not equate to advancement in spiritual awareness. Today, I was reminded that Rumi had quite a few good things to say that could positively impact my current situation.
For instance, here’s one of my favorite quotes:
Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.– Rumi
As I thought about that, I remembered how passionate I as back in November when I was participating in NaNoWriMo and working on a new novel. I wrote nearly 60,000 words in November, then put the book aside and got sucked back into my day-to-day world and forgot about my passion for the story I was working on. Then I ran across this quote:
Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah…it makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.– Rumi
Of course! It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. If something draws you in, then it’s important. So my epiphany for today is that idea that it’s time for me to stop obsessing on my job, to stop focusing purely on how to be functional to other people. It’s time for me to pay attention to my own, personal passion.
This time of sparkling isolation is a time for me to focus on me. It’s time for me to pay attention to those things that move me personally forward in my life. I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know that I cannot keep doing things as I have always done them. The former world is done. It’s dead. No matter what we want, the world will never again be the way it was before this crisis. When we emerge on the other side, things will be different. I will be different.
My challenge now is to be ready for that ‘new world’ that awaits us on the other side of this crisis. Today, I choose to focus on my passion and today, that’s working on my novel. Hopefully, soon, everyone will be talking about my book – not just me. As Rumi said:
Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.– Rumi
It’s only Quarantine if it comes from the Quarante province of France. Otherwise, it’s just Sparkling Isolation.
