Meet the Transport Team at Lurie Children's Hospital
I’ve had many blessings lately and one of them is meeting and interviewing two special people that are part of a team of individuals who have very specialized jobs; occupations, at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, that I didn’t even know existed before I met them.
Let me introduce you to Danielle and Sheila. Danielle is a registered nurse who worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for 5 years and then transitioned to the Transport Team where she not only takes care of newborns to teens en route to Lurie Children’s but many times establishes close bonds with patient’s families by doing so. She’s been on the Transport Team for 12 years.
Sheila is a Respiratory Specialist who also worked in the “PIC-U,” as they called it, and she had been at Lurie Children’s for 4 years and was also was intrigued with its Transport Team and then joined it 8 years ago. When I interviewed Sheila, I was struck with her stories of bonding with the families she’s met, like Danielle, and how she’s kept in touch with many of her passengers for years.
I do hope you will watch my 3 1/2 minute interview excerpt with these two ladies. You’ll be just as excited to meet them as I was because their first-hand stories of their patients and what they do for them is incredible.
What does the Transport Team do? They are usually the first people who meet and greet many of the incoming patients and their families to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. The Transport Team is a 24/7 operation which utilizes specially equipped vans, planes and helicopters to move a child from facilities in or around Chicago, and sometime other states, to Lurie Children’s. The Team is made up of highly trained critical care experts who make sure that their passengers are treated as precious cargo. While monitoring vital signs for doctors and assisting in medical assessments, Transport Team members, like Danielle and Sheila, keep patients and parents comfortable with their personal professional human care-giving talents.
The Lurie Children’s Hospital Transport Team is unique in the Chicago area and these skilled professionals are highly respected even at the hospitals and facilities where they pick up their patients. The Transport Team is certified and trained in Neonatal Resuscitation, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Acute Stabilization of the critically ill or injured infant.
