Whiskeys to Keep You Warm This Winter

Just in time for winter, Chicago recently played host to a number of Irish and Scottish whisky tastings. From limited edition Irish whiskeys to Scotch straight from the highlands, the golden brown nectar will keep you warm for months on end.

Whether you spell it whiskey with an ‘e’ (the Irish / American way) or without (the Scottish way), there are plenty of new options to consider this December.

Glenfiddich: Age of Discovery: Bourbon Cask Reserve (19 Year)

Almost old enough to drink a glass of scotch, Glenfiddich’s 19 year old single malt Scotch whisky is aged in American bourbon casks. Picking up a mix of sweetness and dried fruits from the casks, the bright whiskey has a sweet aftertaste that’s different than the Glenfiddich you’re used to. Perfect for the Glenfiddich drinker on your holiday gift list.

Auchentoshan (Ock-Un-Tosh-An) Single Malt Scotch

With a name that looks and sounds more German than Scotch, the single malt has the typical age ranges (12, 18 & 21) and a unique Three Wood whisky – whisky aged in three different casks.  After trying four different varieties, including the limited edition Valinch, Auchentoshan is best enjoyed neat. If you really feel the need to mix it, consider using it in a Rob Roy - a Manhattan made with Scotch whisky.

Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix

The new edition celebrates the courage and optimism of the Tullamore people, who, like Chicagoans, rebuilt after a fire roared through their city.  Thankfully, the recipe for great whiskey wasn’t lost in the fire and we can raise a glass of this credibly smooth whiskey with distinctive toffee notes.

However you choose to celebrate this season, remember to celebrate responsibly.

Great selections! Auchentoshan is always one of my favorites at WhiskyFest and I love the story (and taste) of Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix. Will have to try Glenfiddich!
