NEW! The David Leonardis Report

26 April 2007 Send To a Friend

As much as I try to be everywhere and know everything that’s going on in Chicago, that’s just darn impossible! So, I’m happy to welcome David Leonardis.

David is a gallery owner, with namesake locations in Wicker Park and River North. But he’s not your “I’m too cool for you” type.

From an article about David by Meredith Landry: “He strives to bridge the gap between those who create art and those who buy it. And there are not many galleries in Chicago—or the world, for that matter—that do so as seamlessly as Leonardis.

His philosophy on how to bring together those opposing sides is the same today as it was when he opened his eponymous gallery 14 years ago. He believes in defying the clichéd intimidating gallery environment by offering affordable artwork, making the space fun and being an approachable dealer.”

David is now bringing that same philosophy to TLT. He attends more functions than a social reporter, and we get to live vicariously through him.

Please welcome him today with his first insight into life in Chicago!

David Leonardis PortraitHello and welcome to my first official column entry.
First things first I want to thank Theresa from the Local Tourist for being gracious enough to provide me with this platform. I hope this will be the beginning of a long relationship.
Tuesday night I went to see the CUBS play Milwaukee. I Love Wrigley Field. It’s a great place to see a game. If you’re wondering who won, just take a listen to this quote from my Guest Expert Ralph Wallace of www.Collegesportingnews.com.
Like Matthew McConaughey said to the kid in Dazed and Confused…”It would have been a lot cooler if you did”.
On Monday night I went to Wrigley again and somehow the CUBS were able to lose after a getting 4 runs early in the game. I was sitting next to some Brewers fans and they were a little rough. I guess I shouldn’t have felt too bad because when I went to the Braves/Cubs game a few years ago I was doing the “Tomahawk Choke” when they were losing. I remember reading in the Atlanta news paper’s RANT section about how upset the fans were that “Those terrible CUBS fans were mocking us.” So as they say, “Turnabout is fair play”. Oh well.
In case anyone is wondering I’m a CUBS fan. I went to see the White Sox play the Texas Rangers last week. I was in the 11th row behind the dugout. Sammy Sosa was playing and when he got to third base I was calling out, “Hey Corky!” The fans in my section all thought it was pretty funny. The thing is that I am a Cubs fan to the point that I felt like I was cheating on my nonexistent girlfriend. This season I’m off to a pretty good running start in my attempt to break my single season CUBS home game attendance record of 26(SSCHGAR). I’ve been to 4 so far and I really wanted to go today but it looks like it’s going to be a little rainy. The CUBS are 1 win and 3 loses when I am in attendance so far. I’m hoping the CUBS and my record will get better. I’ll keep you posted.
I just went to TOAST on Damen for a very lovely lunch. I went with today’s Guest Expert restauranteur Roger Herring from Socca which is located on Clark st. just north of Belmont. Roger and I split two fantastic sandwiches. The eggplant and the turkey burger. The atmosphere there is part hipster, part Mom’s with their children and part business lunch place. A little something for everyone. I asked Roger what he thought of the place and he said, “I’m speechless. It was so good. The food is very fresh and a great variety of breads and vegetarian items to choose from.”
Well, the CUBS are up 5 nothing against the Brewers today. No rain out and maybe they can hold on to the lead better today. Now the Brewers have two on and no outs in the top of the fifth. A couple more hits and now it CUBS 5 Brewers 2. First pitch of the bottom of the 6th inning and Derek Lee hits his first Home run of the season! CUBS are up 6 to 2. The Brewers have Matt Wise pitching. Not so Wise after all. I’m going to predict that CUBS Win!
Chicago is having 5 different Art Fairs at the Merchandise Mart this weekend and there is art everywhere. I’m having the Andy Kane / Michel Balasis closing reception Friday from 6-midnight at my River North Gallery which is also my Art Gallery’s 15 year Anniversary. http://www.dlg-gallery.com/ There are many other receptions going on as well around the city. Check out www.newcitychicago.com for more listings.
Well that’s it for today. I hope you all enjoyed my first column. I’ll be going out even more on the Chicago scene to let you know what’s going on.  Thanks for Reading.
