Chicago Trivia: Labor’s Riot

In many countries May 1 is celebrated as International Workers Day. Although it’s not a holiday in the United States, the Haymarket Riot was the impetus. May 1, 1886 was set by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions as the official start date of the 8-hour work day. Protests were organized around the country and Chicago was considered the center of the movement. On May 3 four striking workers were killed in a confrontation with police, and a rally the following day in Haymarket Square resulted in a massive riot with several casualties. Where was Haymarket Square?
