TIDINGS OF TAP is a Loveable Holiday Treat

Chicago Tap Theatre presents their annual holiday show this weekend at the University of Illinois Chicago Theatre. I had the opportunity to preview it at their rehearsal last weekend – and even in workout clothes and a tiny narrow studio, the energy and talent was relentless. There is something so unique about what CTT does with every show – but this one in particular stands out in a slew of holiday offerings. Holiday shows tend to polarize themselves – either they are sugar sweet, or bitter mockeries. TIDINGS OF TAP is certainly joyful, but it never pokes you in the eye with “Christmas Cheer.” In fact, it is delightfully non-denominational, featuring Christmas classics such as the all acoustic “Carol of the Bells” along side the Chanukah themed “Hava Nagila.” Many pieces are plainly winter themed – showing the simple joys of the season of contemplation and new beginnings. My favorite piece from the preview fit this bill: “Spyrographe.” This all female piece is strikingly soft and feminine, with lovely arm movement throughout. Too often tap is dominated by aggressive male energy, arms flailing with no plan. That is rarely if ever seen at a Chicago Tap Theatre show – the choreography is always thoughtful, densely layered and innovative. The choreography of artistic director of Mark Yonally is so distinctive – punctuated cleanly, snappy and passionate. I can’t help but think this growing Chicago company is not only providing solid evenings of entertainment – they are expanding the art of tap, period. Ball change.
