Classic Places to Eat at in Chicago That are Locked in Time
The Chicago Downtown Loop and River North Areas have changed a lot over the years. There's been much new construction and the face of the entire area has been drastically altered. Since the closing of the much loved Frankie Z's I felt compelled to write about some classic joints that not only transport you back in time, but have great food, and great ambiance.
This is one of my top lunch places in downtown Chicago for sure. Fries are actually made from real potatoes. They slice them thin and long style. Those thin oval shaped crisp potatoes are simply unreal. Highlights are the Chicken parm, eggplant parm, and meatball sub. Great beer selection and a fairly nice sized bar inside, though the focus is on the food. The owners of this family run Italian place are so nice. This place is just pure awesome and has been around for decades. A must try.
This gem is tucked away in the 29 S. LaSalle Building. For years it was tucked away at the end of the arcade and near impossible to find unless someone was taking you there. They have since added a small sandwhichboard sign with and arrow on LaSalle street. While the sign has been added, not much else has changed. I must say I absolutely love this place. Home made bread is must. You just can't come here and not try the bread. The place has beyond eclectic decor and you have the choice of sitting in the main room or at the counter. Counter top is SUPER low..Be ready to be transported back to the 1960's.
Nestled in a small corner in an area full of brand new everything, the Ohio House Coffee Shop is locked in time. And it shows. Everything in the area is new. Brand new restaraunts, clubs, even the glitzy McDonalds across the street. It's kind of cool a place like this still exists. I'd say going here wins the "time machine" battle of all the places listed here, as when you enter, you're transported back to the 1950's. Grab some coffee, grab some breakfast or lunch. Can't go wrong with any of the specials of the day.
Since 1969, this is not only a great place to grab a beer, but there are FREE peanuts! You can even throw your shells on the floor! Gotta love a place with an ambiance like this. This is a great place to grab a burger and a beer. Hands down.
This is another family run classic Italian place. Food here never dissapoints. Menu selection is huge, as is the inside. The seating is comfortable and service is great. Not only is the food tasty, but prices are great for both food and beer. They have a bar tucked in the back, and do big parties. My favorite thing here is the Chicken Parm.
