Last night LCD Soundsystem (who is rumored to be on their last tour ever or something like that) played one of two Chicago shows at Aragon Ballroom. I am not a fan of Aragon, especially for any electronic instruments, but holy wow. The place shook, but you could actually hear the music, unlike the muffled garble I have come to expect from that venue. Indie pop untzers Hot Chip opened and made me sorry that I got there 30 minutes late. First, heavy beats in the style of house and then when LCD took the stage, a dance party reminiscent of The Talking Heads, except with more drums and better lights. And heavier bass. In fact, bass so heavy it might make you weak in the knees; this didn't seem to phase anyone around me though. I had a fabulous time, even when they weren't playing their huge hits like "Daft Punk is Playing at My House", "Drunk Girls" (I wasn't a Drunk Girl, but there were quite a few ladies living it up. School night you know.), and "I Can Change" (which has been stuck in my head for several months). The rest of the time was just full out happy dancing with a few of my new closest friends (I attended alone). When LCD drummer/producer James Murphy closed out the show with "Home", I felt right at home.
Lucky/happy day! LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip tear it up again tonight at The Riviera. In my opinion, that venue rocks even harder. And all of my friends are going; maybe your friends too? Either way, I"m going back for take two. Bring earplugs if you plan to stand practically on top of the speakers, which is a good plan.
