Remember that lovely 80 degree Sunday we had in March? You know, the day that cemented the thought in our minds that summer was here to stay two months early in Chicago? Psych! We were wrong. But that was the day that David, by BF, got his Harley out of cold-storage and I got to ride on the back of his hog to “hog heaven” from Uptown to M Restaurant in Highland Park.
As you can tell by the picture this Tuesday through Saturday Lunch and Dinner restaurant has a charming large outside area that faces south and west and David and I took advantage of one of the few tables by one of the two fire pits.
M Restaurant was an unexpected find and I cannot recommend it enough. The service was awesome and the food exquisite. Much like many of my positive non-downtown restaurant reviews, I got a kick out of being served by a non-rushed waiter, eating well prepared delicious food and then paying less than I would have had I had the same quality food in the city.
We ordered the starters the Fried Green Tomatoes, and the Beets & Barrata Cheese appetizers, thinking that we would only stop for a glass of wine and then ride back home. But after savoring our choices while we watched the sunset and also after seeing another table order what looked very yummy: the Scallops in a citrus-braised endive with candied pistachios-- we decided to stay for a main course and I was so happy that we did.
I ordered the Mahi Mahi and David ordered the Hanger Steak with mustard greens grits, caramelized fennel and crispy leaks. My fish was terrific and David loved his steak and now we both can’t wait to ride up to Highland Park again.
Maybe you can tell by my food descriptions that M Restaurant is a top American cuisine foodie lover’s eatery with a Southern flair. They have a huge selection of Bourbons and I felt like I was at a restaurant like a few I’ve been to in the Laguna Beach area. It’s only straight up Lake Shore Drive, past Evanston into the North Shore--a nice pretty ride for a big payoff.
I’m only sorry it took me a whole month to find the time to write my review of M Restaurant but it’s just in time for you to know about it to drive up there and start enjoying their wonderful patio and food.
