Gluten Free Dining In Chicago
Celiac disease is becoming more and more prevalent. In fact, according to CeliacCentral.org, it affects about three million Americans. It's such an issue that the U.S. Senate has declared September 13 Celiac Awareness Day.
We've got a whole list of Chicago restaurants that feature gluten-free items, and here are some of our favorites below:
This non-traditional steakhouse is an all-you-can-eat extravaganza of gluten-free food. For $48 you can have as much as you want of "raw, shaved asparagus; purple Peruvian potatoes, hummus stuffed eggs, salmon and grapefruit ceviche; salted melon and frisee; elote; watermelon and heirloom tomatoes; wild mushrooms with feta; tabbouleh; roasted pineapple Madagascar with orange aioli; buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes; strawberries and arugula" - and that's just their Harvest Tables! The main course includes round after round of meat, chicken, and fish.
Offering tapas before tapas was hot, Cafe Ba Ba Reeba has a whole Gluten Free menu. Items include chicken curry salad, wood-roasted sweet potato bravas with pomegranate aioli, and rioja short ribs with manchego mashed potatoes. They even serve Estrella Damm Daura, a gluten-free beer.
For a quick, healthy, gluten-free lunch, pop into one of Roti's several Loop locations. The restaurant is set up similar to a Chipotle or a Subway; you basically create your meal as you go. If you think the idea of eating Mediterranean without pita is just wrong, they offer a special bread without gluten for $2 extra.
A pizza place? For Celiacs? Yep. Chef/Owner Jonathon Fox has created a special gluten-free menu just for you. You can get steamed PEI mussels, sans the traditional crostini accompaniment, several salads including the deee-licious Nichols Farm Heirloom Beets with goat cheese and balsamic vinaigrette, and sauteed gulf shrimp with local summer squash risotto carnoroli.
