Feeling Fruity

The Local Tourist's picture

Trying to eat healthy can seem like an expensive proposition. It often seems cheaper to get processed and packaged food than to get fresh produce.

I've got one word for you: Stanley's.

Stanley's Fruit Market (not to be confused with the popular bar called Stanley's) is a fresh food fanatics haven. I feel like a little kid when I go and am actually happy as I walk away from the checkout lane. Why? Look what I purchased yesterday:

  • 8oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 3lb yellow onions
  • 4 limes
  • 4 plums
  • 1lb bananas
  • .85lb nectarines
  • Head of romaine lettuce
  • celery
  • 4 kiwis
  • 1 red pepper
  • 4 corn on the cob
  • 2lbs of strawberries

Guess what I spent. Guess. Give up?

$13.79

Crazy, I know, but true! There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping here. Since everything's so cheap you'll be tempted to load up, but make sure to only get what you can eat in a week or else it will go bad. Also, the parking lot's tiny and people are mad crazy for their 10¢ kiwis, so ride a bike or take public transportation if possible.
