Charity Chat Episode 23: Connections for Abused Women & Their Children
Nationally one in every four women suffers from domestic abuse. Two thirds of all people know someone who's a victim. In Chicago the city's domestic violence hotline receives 2500 to 3000 domestic violence related calls per month. The Chicago Police Department is responding on average to over 500 domestic violence calls PER DAY.
The numbers are staggering and illustrate the need for an organization like Connections for Abused Women and Their Children. Domestic violence crosses all demographic and ethnic lines and there is no typical victim. Glenn and I spoke with Anne Borg, Director of Development, about their programs including their shelter, their 24 hour hotline, their work with children of abuse victims, and their Hospital Crisis Intervention Program. CAWC's shelter has 42 beds, almost a third of the city's total of 150. Many of these women and children arrive at the shelter with just the clothes on their backs, so CAWC has a wishlist of items that can help them immediately. The list includes CTA cards, grocery gift cards, diapers, art supplies, toiletries, and much more.
Tonight is the organization's 25th Annual Sounds Of Silence Ball, a fundraiser with dinner and cocktails, a mystery wine raffle, live and silent auctions, and dancing. You can still register online and if you can't make it can offer a donation on their website.
