The Loop is again filed with Christmas cheer as Daley Plaza transforms into a European village filled with candy cane striped wooden huts and twinkling lights. Harkening back to the traditional holiday market in Nuremberg, Germany, Christkindlmarket is opening its doors today at 11am and runs through December 24, 2013.
Hosted by the German American Services, Inc., Christkindlmarket is one of the largest traditional Christmas markets outside of Europe and more than 65% of the vendors travel from Germany to Chicago for the market.
Having visited Christkindlmarkts throughout Germany (Munich, Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and several others), Chicago’s festival is better than some of the other festivals in Europe! **Cough, London, cough. Cough.**
And while you check out the traditional holiday ornaments, nutcrackers and beer steins, don’t forget to enjoy the German sausages, potato pancakes and schnitzel. If potato pancakes and schnitzel don’t tickle your taste buds, try pairing a hot pretzel or roasted nuts with either a German beer or traditional cup of Glühwein (hot spiced wine) for an authentic German experience.
Christkindlmarket is free to enjoy. For more information, visit: www.christkindlmarket.com.
