If you haven’t been to the theatre lately, now is the time go to. Running through Feb. 16, Chicago Theatre Week celebrates the city’s devotion to the performing arts and the vibrant future ahead of us.

Presented by the League of Chicago Theatres in partnership with Choose Chicago, about 100 area stage productions are offering reduced price tickets for $15-$30. In addition to the specially-priced tickets, some theatres are also offering special incentives for Theatre Week patrons, including post-show discussions.

Beyond the stage performances, the Storefront Playwright Project is giving downtown shoppers and commuters a look behind the curtain at the creative process. Taking place at Expo 72 (at 72 E. Randolph St.), 11 Chicago playwrights are inviting passersby to “look over their shoulder” as they work behind a window with a video screen facing the sidewalk.  Here you’ll be able to read what the playwright is writing and see them create the next great Chicago play in real time.

Some performances are already sold out – including the “Blue Man Group” and “A Clown Car Named Desire” – but don’t let that hold you back. With more than 100 performances, here are a few recommendations kick start your search:

  • Chicago’s Golden Soul (musical) – The Black Ensemble Theater
  • Contemporary Choreographers (musical) – The Joffrey Ballet
  • Improve All-Stars (comedy) – UP Comedy Club
  • Luna Gale (drama) – Goodman Theatre
  • Million Dollar Quartet (musical) – Apollo Theater
  • Old Jews Telling Jokes (comedy) – The Royal George Theatre
  • The Phantom of the Opera (musical) – Cadillac Palace Theatre
  • Tom Jones (comedy, pictured above) – Northlight Theatre
  • Tribes (drama) – Steppenwolf Theatre Company
