This week’s band: Paper Arrows
19 May 2008 Send To a Friend
Michael Teach from Chicago Acoustic Underground first told me about Paper Arrows and said I just had to check them out. I’ve learned to listen to him, so we went to their CD release party at Schuba’s a couple of months ago. Once again, Michael’s spot on.
Joe Goodkin’s been compared to James Taylor and you can hear the similarity so clearly in some songs it’s almost like he’s channeling him. In others his voice is reminiscent of Counting Crows front man Adam Duritz. He also reminded me of Josh Kelley, with his crazy curly hair, scruffy beard, and laid-back stage presence. But ultimately, with bassist Jay Marino and drummer Darren Garvey, Paper Arrows’ sound is its own. (p.s. Darren Garvey is the same insanely good percussionist who plays with Andreas Kapsalis.)
Their next Chicago show is at Metro on June 6.
