Save the Date: Sam Roberts Band at Beat Kitchen, 3/3/09
Canadian imports the Sam Roberts Band comes into Chicago on March 3, to Beat Kitchen, one of Chicago's finest small rock venues.
Sam Roberts' career started slowly. His first band failed to make an impact on the scene outside of Canada and broke up in 1999. So, he recorded his first album at home, titled Brother Down, then another in 2001, The Inhuman Condition. The single "Brother Down" from that album became a big hit in Canada and led to a contract with Universal Music, a new band and the release of We Were Born in a Flame.
The band continues to be a hit in Canada but has yet to fully catch on in the U.S. That may change when their latest album, Love at the End of the World is released in the States on Feb. 17.
The Sam Roberts Band played in Chicago during Lollapalooza in 2007, a performance I saw that showed they had a following here, although small. But it was a good show and the crowd was grooving. Tickets are currently on sale for $12 through Beat Kitchen's website. In the meantime, enjoy this video of "Bridge to Nowhere."
